Meta-performance: Data Dancing

Stanford University is offering this fall 2011 - Introduction to AI (Artificial Intelligence) with identical coursework to its traditional physical classroom for free to all via the internet. At the moment, over 135,000 have signed up for the class.. This is enough people to form a real “culture” in both the cultural and petri dish senses of the word. This is a unique moment and rare opportunity to observe and participate in the evolution of internet culture as well.

Introduction to Artistic Intelligence is a parallel course that is also freely available to the public. This course will function both as real educational introduction to the tools and techniques used today in contemporary art and as a collaborative art project in its own right. As a piece of Performance Art each of the 874 participants actions and non-action are inside a specific frame of time and finite number of people. How can we understand or even see the artistic sign created in such large  group?

Artistic Intelligence Cooperative is creating a Meta-performance called Data-Dancing. Using a Wii and a Robotic agent to Dance in the Data created during the 10 week project. Both the log activity as well as post activity genereated by the project will be dynamically visualized along with a motion data from both human dancer and a robot. Using a wii game system it will be possible for the viewer to dance the data and create a meta-performance of a collective work of Performance art.

For those who from the project who to participate in the development, Data Dancing will be a multi-diciplinary project. Aprille and Olamana are working on the data visualization Here is a Pdf with some rough One working group lead by Nish will develop music based on the data. If you  play an instrument or are interested in algorithmic music please email or leave a comment below to join the music working group.  Rupesh is leading the working group to develop a learning algorithm and controls for the robot. If you are interested on working on the robotic aspect of the problem email or leave a comment. Mariana has previously worked with a interactive performance with wii controllers.  See video below If you are interested in the wii programming or visualization, by now you know the drill, email or comment below.

I would love to participate, however I’m computer programing challenged! I’m used to always having an IT department, giving them my ideas and having them find a solution. So I’m good at barking orders and saying, “no, do it again”. I don’t know what else I can help with? You let me know.
