Diverse and Representative Data

The foundation of fair AI is representative training data. This means actively seeking out underrepresented perspectives and regularly auditing datasets for imbalances.

Fairness Metrics

Researchers have developed mathematical frameworks for measuring fairness, though defining “fair” itself remains complex. Common metrics include:

  • Demographic parity — equal prediction rates across groups
  • Equal opportunity — equal true positive rates across groups
  • Individual fairness — similar individuals receive similar predictions
